Doing breakfast is the new going out in Belgrade. There is no better way than to start your day with a delicious meal. I’ve discovered four new breakfast spots for you. Enjoy.

Zemlja Čuda Bar

Zemlja Čuda (engl. wonderland) is an Alice in Wonderland  themed bar located on a beautiful square in Zemun. It is a place, where one can escape from reality and be part of a fairy tale. The bar is decorated with instagram-worthy wonderland details, such as cards, cups, flowers and clocks. Everything is possible in a bar, where the floor is a chessboard and the ceiling a daisy meadow. The menu is full of Alice in Wonderland quotes while cutlery and glasses are decorated with ‘eat me’, ‘drink me’ and ‘try me’ signs.

Charming Zemlja Čuda has a great selection of breakfast. If you prefer savoury breakfast, I recommend Prženice á la Zemlja Čuda, french toast with cream cheese and fresh peppers, served with tomatoes and cucumber. (290 RSD) Further, they serve sandwiches (180-460 RSD) and savoury pancakes (230-270 RSD). When your sweet tooth calls for a treat, you can satisfy it with waffles with ice cream and fruit, french toast with eurokrem (Serbian chocolate spread, 290 RSD), pancakes (~220 RSD), plum dumplings (230 RSD), chocolate donuts (120 RSD) and so on. Large portions, reasonable prizes and the loveliest staff in Belgrade. P.S.: They are also known for their original cocktails with names like Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts and White Rabbit. (~350 RSD)

Mala Gostionica

Mala Gostionica (engl. little inn) serves traditional food for breakfast, which you can’t miss, if you’ve never tried it before. You can create your own breakfast plate by ordering more small bites, like eggs, ajvar, home made cracklins, ham and kajmak. Or order one of the seven Gourmet Breakfasts (340 – 460 RSD). Six of them include different egg dishes with ajvar, peppers in sour cream and Serbian corn bread.

My recommendation is the Mala Gostionica breakfast: uštipci (fried dough), beef ham, cracklins, kajmak and peppers in sour cream. Fresh and yummy! The little restaurant is located in Dorćol, very close to the pedestrian zone, Knez Mihailova Street. It has a warm atmosphere and a vintage vibe. I guess it’s because of the interesting interior.

Od Usta do Usta

Od Usta do Usta is located in a backyard of a concrete building block in Vračar. So, don’t give up, if it’s tricky to find in the beginning. The bistro is a popular place amongst locals and foreigners, who live in Belgrade. Some come by themselves and work on their laptops, while others enjoy the all day breakfast. The cosy interior will make you feel like you are at home. The cool thing about this place is, that they prepare dishes with locally grown vegetables and organic meat.

For breakfast you can choose between a salmon sandwich (360 RSD), an italian piadina (310 RSD), croque madame (290 RSD), an omelette and sunny side up eggs (270/320 RSD). They serve also very good bruschettas with interesting topping combinations. If you prefer sweet breakfast I recommend the mouth-watering chocolate souffle and the apple pie (~280 RSD).  If you are a coffee drinker, you will love this place.

Cocotte Bistro

Maybe it’s not a coincidence that Cocotte Bistro is located in Francuska (France) Street, few minutes from the city center. Inspired by Parisian bistros and hotel bars Cocotte will spoil you with an authentic French breakfast. You can choose between Quiche Lorraine, Croque Monsieur and filled croissants. They also serve Eggs Benedict, crêpes, baked eggs with bacon and french toast with prosciutto, ajvar, feta cheese and grilled tomatoes.

They serve great coffee. If you need extra energy for the day, I recommend the fresh squeezed juices. The staff is so efficient, friendly and professional. The bistro is also known for its preclubbing nights with electro funk beats and delicious cocktails. Great place, pity about the smoking.
