Are you looking to satisfy your sweet tooth with some pastries? This little guide will tell you where to go for cake and other sweet pleasures in Belgrade.

Mandarina Cake Shop

Mandarina Cake Shop is a small family business located in the city center. The owner and main confectioner graduated in Culinary Arts from University of West London. Mandarina is known for its high quality ingredients such as the Callebaut chocolate from Belgium, a superb design and mouth watering flavours. The range varies with the seasons depending on the holiday season and fresh fruit available.

I can’t tell which cake is the most delicious because every single one is a masterpiece in its own right. It is hard to choose but you can’t go wrong with any of those beautiful creations. The lovely staff will help you choose the right cake. I tried the Creamy Nougat cake and the Mascarpone Mousse with strawberries, pineapple, ginger and limewhich is glutenfree by the way. Both tasted delicious and very fresh. The place itself is rather small in size. If you’re lucky, you won’t wait in queue for a seat.

Fini

Fini started as a little manufactory and got a pastry shop few days ago. Entering this pâtisserie took me back to the time when I was living as an Au pair in Paris. They have wonderful french pastries like éclairs, macarons and croissants. But also cake pops, tarts and season cakes, which remind me on my grandmother’s. Their macarons, very popular amongst locals, are marvellous. You can spoil yourself with fresh ingredients and interesting flavours such as lavender, passion fruit, apricot-ginger and many more.

The cakes are simple hold, with less decoration, which I prefer. So the interior. It is minimal, light and cosy. The atmosphere makes you calm down and enjoy your cake. Further, they serve delicious coffee, which goes perfectly with a piece of cake. Soon Fini is going to create its own ice cream. If you need cakes and macarons for a special occasion, Fini is the right adress.

Mali Princ

The Mali Princ (engl. little prince) pastry shop is a fairy tale for grownups and exists on two locations: Obilićev Venac and Palmotićeva Street. I prefer the second one. The place reminds me on a traditional Viennese coffee place and an old English tea room. It was one of Belgrade’s first places where one could try french macarons. Mali Princ, existing almost 30 years, is known for its great selection of Serbian, Turkish, Viennese and Italian cakes. Tara, made with chocolate cream is their most popular cake.

Further, they offer warm fruit and chocolate cakes served with vanilla cream, perfect for cold winter days. And what goes better with a piece of cake than a cup of tea? Mali princ has a big selection of teas. You can buy home made  macarons, cookies, pralines and jam at the shop inside the pâtisserie.

Pelivan

Belgrade has one of Europe’s oldest pastry shops after Lisbon, Paris, Genova, Budapest and Madrid. Pelivan is a family business with a rich history existing since 1851. It reopened the same year after it got destroyed during WWII. Since 1941, Pelivan  is located opposite the main post office at Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra. They serve traditional pies and cakes which have been influenced by two sides: Austria and Turkey.

The creamy cakes are influenced by the Austrians, while sweets like tolumbe and baklave are brought by the Ottomans. The Pelivan cake, made of chocolate, caramel and hazelnuts is the confectionery’s most popular cake. If you want to try something from the old Belgrade days, try boza, a sweet drink made of corn and yeast. For dessert I recommend žito with whipped cream. Famous people like the writer and nobel prize winner Ivo Andrić visited Pelivan because of the home made ice cream.
